Taking photos of my “subjects” is one of my favorite things about the pet portrait process. Especially with dogs as awesome and handsome as Rickee. Thought I’d share a few snapshots from our recent session this past weekend on a beautiful day in the backyard. Hope you enjoy them!

I'm purposely ignoring you. 200 photos should be enough.

And he was right. On to the tough part: sorting through ALL of them to find the best portrait worthy shot.

Decisions, decisions...

Looks like Blue Steel is a possible contender...

Can’t wait to hear which photo my clients pick for Rickee’s portrait. But he’s such a photogenic pup…I don’t envy their decision!

If you’re curious to see the first aussie I ever painted, check out “Patou’s” portrait on my website.

Thanks, as always, for your interest in my work. New work coming soon!

Okay I cheated.

The rule was to finish this twitter portrait in less than 140 minutes. But I ended up painting for a extra 15. In my defense, Lulabelle’s free portrait was finished in 2 hours even, so I figure I am still under as a whole. And it’s my contest anyhow, so whatever. Sorry, that’s the guilt talking. Here’s Kingsley’s (155 min) portrait!

July's free twitter portrait winner, Kingsley

July's free twitter portrait winner, Kingsley

Below is how he started out: grey gesso, a grid and a white charcoal pencil. You can barely see him, but this is the stage I call, “He’s on the canvas.” It’s really important to get him on the canvas accurately because there’s no time, I’ve learned, to fix much of anything in 140 minutes.

Next I “sketch” an outline with paint. Now he’s really on the canvas.

This is what I refer to as “Kingsley as Red Panda.”

And why I call it that.

And here is where I made a mistake. For some reason I went all “clown color” on poor Kingsley. Usually I paint from dark to light (ie: Lulabelle), but this time I thought, well…I don’t know what I was thinking. This is Kingsley in temporary clown make-up.

Then it’s a race against my own $&%*!!^@ self-imposed time limit to actually paint a black and white dog over a color dog. Within 45 minutes. I was on a roll and forgot to take pics for a while so the image below is a couple leaps forward in the process.

Here’s where I start actually seeing that the clown make-up might work out. This stage gave me hope (and relief) because it started to look okay.

A big thank you to Shanni, Kingsley’s human, for being so patient for her portrait. I had to put Kingsley on hold for a month longer than I had planned. (Of course, my thank you is not half as good as Kingsley and friend’s thank you. Or even Lulabelle’s.)

Could YOU be the next winner of the 140 (I promise this time) minute free twitter portrait? You’re in luck because the next give away is on 09/01/09! Please read the contest entry rules and get those photos ready to post.

And you don’t have to win a contest to have your own four-legged family member painted. Check out my online gallery and drop me an email.

As always, thanks for reading.

June’s free twitter portrait winner, Sara (aka: stinkerpants on twitter) was kind enough to share the unveiling of her new portrait of Lulabelle! Here’s it is being unwrapped, step by step…

Want to see even more unveiling? Of course you do. Because who doesn’t love cardboard and packing materials? The second official twitter portrait winner posted some great pics on his blog mackenziespeaks.com.

The next twitter portrait give away is in August so start snapping pics of your pooch and follow me on twitter for the deets.

The first international free portrait winner, Kingsley, took time out of his day in the Netherlands to don an outfit of “thanks.” (Most likely inspired by Lulabelle’s thank you) Looks like his buddy Robin is vying for a free portrait now too…

Kingsley entered the free portrait contest THREE times before he won. Persistence truly paid off! To win he read my photo tips, studied the past winners and came up with with the winning shot.

Next contest is in August. Keep an eye out for the deets in a tweet on twitter!

Holy Mackerel, That’s Alotta Dogs
A record number of you wonderful tweeps took time out of your busy days to enter my free twitter portrait contest this month. I can barely see the keyburd imn tyypng on after reviewing 425 of your fantastic photos. I’m no math whiz, but I think that is a grazillion percent increase in submissions from the first contest in March (which had just one entry). Holy mackerel, indeed!

I truly appreciate every single entry and wish I could paint them all. Alas, there can be only one winner this month…and it’s Kingsley!!

I chose Kingsley because of his expression. I think. It’s always hard to tell why I choose what I choose. But something about that face just tugged at me. It also helped that the photo was taken close-up, clearly focused and all that good stuff. I believe this is Kingsley’s THIRD time entering so for all of your disappointed tweeps who didn’t win this round, definitely take another stab in August!

Honorable Mentions
But as always–and ever more this time–there were a flurry of fabulous entries which made it almost impossible for me to choose just one. So I would also like to give the following entries honorable mentions:

“Best Inanimate Non-entry”

Thank You
It’s been so much fun looking at your dogs and connecting on (and off) twitter. The next free portrait contest on twitter will be sometime in late August. I’ll tweet the deets in a couple of weeks and post Kingsley’s portrait soon! In the meantime, remember, you can always have your dog painted without a contest if you like. (I mean, now that you have amazing photos for me to work from.)

Thanks everyone!

The next 140 minute “twitter” portrait give-away is almost here. It seems like I just started these contests, but in just a couple days someone will be lucky winner #6! And the contests must be gaining steam because the lovely JoAnna Lou just blogged about them at Bark Magazine. It’s a great, concise piece on what I am trying to do with all these freebies.

Don’t forget to enter your dog in the contest on July 14th! He or she might be as thankful as Lulabelle was about her portrait.

Thanks for reading.
