I’ve always been a huge animal lover. As a kid, I tried to make friends with pretty much anything that had fur: stray dogs, rabbits, raccoons (trained one to eat out of my hand when I was 12). So for someone like me, getting to paint dogs and cats for a living is a good gig.
But I was looking through some older paintings I did for myself a while back (non-commissioned work) and there wasn’t a ton of soft and cuddly creatures in the mix: there was instead a big warthog, a rhino and a manatee. And a walrus. I tend to forget the walrus.
The truth is that although I melt in the presence of crushingly cute puppies like everyone else, I also love the prickly, the lumbering, the less huggable. So I thought I’d share some of these early paintings. Hope you enjoy them.
Perhaps you’ll forward them on to any iguana owners you know. I’d love to paint something green and spiky.
